Just today, 514 Wood St in Old Town is being demolished, and the same owner has a demolition permit for its neighboring home at 510 Wood St. These properties were sold in May after being marketed as a ‘scrape and build multi-unit’ opportunity. They were purchased for more than $1 million, and while it isn’t clear what will replace them, it is clear the new construction will NOT be affordable.

Our smaller and relatively older housing stock is our most affordable. In a cruel twist, those homes will be targeted for demolition and redevelopment into multi-unit luxury housing. This will NOT help workers and lower-income community members at all. They will be displaced and dispossessed. This is gentrification.
