Bloomberg: Density Without Demolition—Tearing down old buildings won’t make our cities more affordable or inviting.

It’s time to make better use of the buildings and spaces we already have.

Historic preservation supports community affordability and environmental stewardship. Repurposing buildings instead of tearing them down also helps maintain the livability and historical character of neighborhoods.

Whether it was intentional or not, the now-repealed Land Development Code’s city-wide zoning changes encouraged tearing down Fort Collins’ most affordable housing stock and replacing it with incompatible structures.

As pointed out in this article, as with many other cities, Fort Collins has plenty of places to build new housing stock and we should do this thoughtfully instead of with sweeping changes to existing residential zones.
